President Trump announced on Friday that the American steelmaker, United States Steel Corporation, will stay in America and add thousands of jobs and billions of dollars to the economy.
This comes after President Trump hosted Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba at the White House in February and previewed an investment by Japan’s Nippon Steel Corp. in U.S. Steel.
Previously, under Biden, Nippon Steel was set to acquire United States Steel Corporation in a cash transaction valued at nearly $15 billion, raising questions about the future of American industry and labor amid larger national security conversations.
U.S. Steel is a steel producer that supplies products to many industries, including automotive, construction, appliances, energy, containers, and packaging. It was founded in 1901 and is headquartered in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. As of 2022, U.S. Steel was the 27th largest steelmaker in the world, producing about 14.5 million tons of liquid steel annually.
Trump made the announcement in a Truth Social post on Friday.
“This is the largest Investment in the History of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania,” he said, crediting his tariff policies for the boom in “AMERICAN MADE” products:
I am proud to announce that, after much consideration and negotiation, US Steel will REMAIN in America, and keep its Headquarters in the Great City of Pittsburgh. For many years, the name, “United States Steel” was synonymous with Greatness, and now, it will be again. This will be a planned partnership between United States Steel and Nippon Steel, which will create at least 70,000 jobs, and add $14 Billion Dollars to the U.S. Economy.
The bulk of that Investment will occur in the next 14 months. This is the largest Investment in the History of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. My Tariff Policies will ensure that Steel will once again be, forever, MADE IN AMERICA. From Pennsylvania to Arkansas, and from Minnesota to Indiana, AMERICAN MADE is BACK. I will see you all at US Steel, in Pittsburgh, on Friday, May 30th, for a BIG Rally. CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL!
U.S. Steel issued a statement in response, commending President Trump’s “bold” leadership.
“We will grow bigger and stronger through a partnership with Nippon Steel that brings massive investment, new technologies, and thousands of jobs over the next four years,” the company said.
President Trump is a bold leader and businessman who knows how to get the best deal for America, American workers and American manufacturing.
