According to Campus Reform, “The University of California, Los Angeles David Geffen Medical School has been heavily prioritizing race in admissions while the school has fallen in rankings.”
Meanwhile according to Washington Free Beacon, when a Black student applied to UCLA medical school with scores and grades well below average, the admissions committee rightly expressed skepticism about this candidate and his compatibility with the university medical school. What happened next was shocking.
Not only did Dean of Admissions Jennifer Lucero disagree with the committee, but she basically accused them of being racist and uncaring saying ”Did you not know African-American women are dying at a higher rate than everybody else?”
The Dean then went on to argue absurdly that low grades and test scores shouldn’t matter but rather his skin color should out way other considerations. Lucero stated “We need people like this in the medical school.”
This way of thinking is downright dangerous. When it comes to medical school admissions, its dangerous to make race a factor when knowledge and competence are the most important factors to look for in future doctors.
The Supreme Court already banned Affirmative Action in the Summer of 2022.
As one official on the committee pointed out in this case ”I wondered…if this applicant had been [a] white male, or [an] Asian female for that matter, [whether] we would have had that much discussion,”.
According to Campus Reform, over 50% of its students failed standardized tests on family medicine, internal medicine, emergency medicine, and pediatrics.
This virtual signaling has real world consequences. In one case, “A professor described one operating room incident, during which a student could not identify a major artery when asked.”
As Rep. Burgess Owens of Tennessee commented, ”What they’re doing in our medical system is bringing DEI into it.”
UCLA is exhibit A on the dangers of DEI and diversity in medicine. They should comply with the Supreme Court and end any form of affirmative action in their school.
As Rep. Burgess Owens also made clear those that participate in this nonsense will be defunded.
