The White House has shared a readout of President Donald J. Trump’s almost two-hour call with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
During the call, the two leaders agreed on the need to reach a ceasefire and a peace deal in the ongoing Ukraine war and on the need for improved bilateral relations between the U.S. and Russia.
In addition, the leaders spoke in broad terms about the Middle East and the potential for cooperation in future conflicts in the area, specifying that at no point should Iran ever be in the position to destroy Israel.
According to reports, “many elements” of a peace deal with Ukraine have been agreed to, and talks will begin immediately in the Mideast.
Following the call, a Russian official shared, “Under the leadership of president Putin and president Trump, the world has become a much safer place today.”
White House readout:
Today, President Trump and President Putin spoke about the need for peace and a ceasefire in the Ukraine war. Both leaders agreed this conflict needs to end with a lasting peace. They also stressed the need for improved bilateral relations between the United States and Russia. The blood and treasure that both Ukraine and Russia have been spending in this war would be better spent on the needs of their people.
This conflict should never have started and should have been ended long ago with sincere and good faith peace efforts. The leaders agreed that the movement to peace will begin with an energy and infrastructure ceasefire, as well as technical negotiations on implementation of a maritime ceasefire in the Black Sea, full ceasefire and permanent peace. These negotiations will begin immediately in the Middle East.
The leaders spoke broadly about the Middle East as a region of potential cooperation to prevent future conflicts. They further discussed the need to stop proliferation of strategic weapons and will engage with others to ensure the broadest possible application. The two leaders shared the view that Iran should never be in a position to destroy Israel.
The two leaders agreed that a future with an improved bilateral relationship between the United States and Russia has huge upside. This includes enormous economic deals and geopolitical stability when peace has been achieved.
Putin also agreed to a proposal for Russia and Ukraine to stop hitting each other’s energy infrastructure for 30 days, an order that was relayed to the Russian military, according to the Kremlin.
The Kremlin said in a statement that the two leaders had a “detailed and frank exchange of views” on Ukraine during a phone call in which Putin had said that a resolution of the conflict must be “comprehensive, sustainable and long-term”, taking into account Russia’s own security interests and the root causes of the war.
The two leaders discussed a U.S. proposal for a 30-day ceasefire, to which Ukraine agreed last week. The Kremlin said Putin had raised “significant points” about monitoring such a truce and preventing it from being used by Ukraine to mobilise more soldiers and rearm itself.
“It was emphasized that the key condition for preventing the escalation of the conflict and working towards its resolution by political and diplomatic means should be a complete cessation of foreign military assistance and the provision of intelligence information to Kyiv,” the Kremlin said.

President Trump provided more information about his phone call with Vladimir Putin in a Truth Social post on Tuesday afternoon.
“My phone conversation today with President Putin of Russia was a very good and productive one. We agreed to an immediate Ceasefire on all Energy and Infrastructure, with an understanding that we will be working quickly to have a Complete Ceasefire and, ultimately, an END to this very horrible War between Russia and Ukraine. This War would have never started if I were President! Many elements of a Contract for Peace were discussed, including the fact that thousands of soldiers are being killed, and both President Putin and President Zelenskyy would like to see it end. That process is now in full force and effect, and we will, hopefully, for the sake of Humanity, get the job done!” President Trump said on Truth Social.
