In yet another tragic and shocking episode of violence involving a suspect identifying as nonbinary, a police sergeant was struck and injured outside the El Cajon Police Department last week.
The incident culminated in the fatal shooting of the suspect, 24-year-old Andrea Elizabeth Grube, who also went by the name Benjamin Grube.
Initial reports identified Grube as a woman. However, subsequent investigation revealed that the suspect identified as nonbinary and used the name Benjamin Grube. Police are still working to determine the motive for this shocking act of violence.
Authorities revealed that the suspect drove a 2000 Toyota Tundra onto the sidewalk, targeting two officers who were preparing for a retirement ceremony.
According to the press release:
“Just before 1:00 p.m., El Cajon police officers were preparing for a retirement celebration when a truck drove up the sidewalk in front of the station and struck an officer. The driver of the truck then tried to run over another officer. An officer-involved shooting occurred. One officer was taken to the hospital and is being treated for his injuries from being hit by the vehicle. The suspect was also transported for treatment.
We are asking our community to stay clear of the area while our investigators do their work. Per the Countywide Memorandum of Understanding, the San Diego Police Homicide Unit was called to the scene to conduct the officer-involved shooting investigation. Detectives are currently gathering evidence, interviewing witnesses, and examining the circumstances surrounding the shooting.”
According to the San Diego Police Department (SDPD), Grube’s vehicle struck Sergeant Kevin Maxwell, a 28-year veteran of the force, who was thrown into the air before the truck crashed into a tree.
Grube then reportedly attempted to run over another officer, prompting Sergeant Maxwell and Officer Evan Drescher to fire their weapons multiple times at the suspect, Fox 5 San Diego reported.
The sergeant sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was treated at a local hospital, while the suspect succumbed to gunshot wounds at the scene.
More on Fox 5:
According to SDPD, the entire incident was captured on surveillance video and Drescher also had his body worn camera activated.
The motive behind Grube’s alleged actions is still under investigation.
As with other officer-involved-shootings, once SDPD wraps up their investigation, the district attorney’s office will review the case to determine whether the officers’ bear any criminal liability for their actions. El Cajon police will also conduct an administrative review of the incident.
Both the investigations will be overseen by the Federal Bureau of Investigations and the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
